Grief & Loss

“Deep grief sometimes is almost like a specific location, a coordinate on a map of time. When you are standing in that forest of sorrow, you cannot imagine that you could ever find your way to a better place. But if someone can assure you that they themselves have stood in that same place, and now have moved on, sometimes this will bring hope” - Elizabeth Gilbert

Counseling for Complicated &  Disenfranchised Grief

Have you experienced a loss more than a year ago but are still unable to move forward with your own life? In some cases, the most painful, distressing symptoms of grief are persistent and cause severe disruption in a person's life despite time passing.  This is known as complicated grief, known more formally as persistent complex bereavement disorder.

Complicated grief can often go hand-in-hand with disenfranchised grief. In situations where loss cannot be openly acknowledged or is stigmatized in some way, such as in cases of death by suicide or overdose, disenfranchised grief may occur and cause the bereaved acute and complicated symptoms of grief. Other examples of disenfranchised grief include infertility, miscarriage, or a stigmatized relationship (ie. extramarital affair). If your feeling as if you are unable to move forward, or have lost something or someone that you find difficult to grieve publiciacly, you're in the right place.

Counseling at HerTime for complicated or disenfranchised grief involves everything listed under grief counseling to the left, as well as:

  • Judgement free zone

  • Recognition that all loss is valid

  • Your pain is real, despite the loss or circumstances

  • Help identifying how complicated grief is influencing you physically, mentally and socially

  • Work together to find what is preventing you from healing and find a way forward
